Requirements for Foreigners to Become Turkish Citizens<\/span><\/h2>

Law No. 5901 sets out different criteria for foreigners to acquire Turkish citizenship according to various conditions. Accordingly:<\/p>

Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship Under General Provisions<\/span><\/h2>

Pursuant to Article 11 of Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901, foreigners who wish to acquire Turkish citizenship are required to meet the following conditions:<\/p>

They must have reached the age of majority and have the power of discernment according to their own national law, or, if stateless, according to Turkish Civil Code No. 4721.<\/p>

They must have resided in T\u00fcrkiye continuously for five years prior to the date of application.<\/p>

They must have confirmed their decision to settle in T\u00fcrkiye through actions such as acquiring immovable property in T\u00fcrkiye, establishing a business, making an investment, transferring their trade and business center to T\u00fcrkiye, working in a workplace subject to a work permit, or similar conduct; or by marrying a Turkish citizen, applying as a family, having a mother, father, sibling, or child who previously acquired Turkish citizenship, or completing their education in T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>

They must not have any disease that poses a threat to public health.<\/p>

They must show that they have good moral character by acting with a sense of responsibility required for living together in society, inspire trust in those around them through their behavior, and not have bad habits that are not socially tolerated and are contrary to social values.<\/p>

They must be able to speak Turkish at a level sufficient to adapt to social life.<\/p>

They must have an income or profession that will enable them to support themselves and the persons they are obliged to care for in T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>

They must not have any condition that constitutes an obstacle in terms of national security and public order.<\/p>

Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship Through the Right of Choice<\/span><\/h2>

Persons who lost Turkish citizenship due to their mother or father losing citizenship by obtaining permission to renounce it, and who submit a written declaration to acquire Turkish citizenship within three years from reaching adulthood, may regain Turkish citizenship by exercising the right of choice.<\/p>

The loss of Turkish citizenship through the right of choice becomes effective from the date of the Ministry\u2019s decision determining the existence of the conditions for exercising this right.<\/p>

This is generally a method of acquiring citizenship applied to persons who, according to their personal circumstances, are considered beneficial to be granted citizenship of the country and who do not pose a risk in terms of public order.<\/p>

Exceptional acquisition of Turkish citizenship is also possible under the conditions specified by law.<\/p>

It may also be possible for immigrants and asylum seekers to be accepted as citizens under Settlement Law No. 5543 upon the proposal of Turkish authorities and by decision of the Council of Ministers.<\/p>

Turkish citizenship may be acquired with a residence requirement or without seeking a residence requirement.<\/p>

Turkish citizenship may also be acquired through marriage if certain conditions are met.<\/p>
